Ships Ahoy on the Treasure Coast and Beyond...

Settling back at the Elliott Museum studio after a hectic holiday season, Radio Man and History Lady kick-started 2011 by focussing on a great Treasure Coast family attraction and inviting Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast executive director Tammy Calabria as the first show guest of the year.

For many years, the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast was the dream of a dedicated group of local and seasonal residents. The dream became a reality in 2008, and with the recently added Spanish Galleon exhibit, the Children’s Museum is a must see and do for visiting families and local families alike. Last Friday’s show will provide you everything you need to know about this Treasure Coast arts and culture asset. Thanks Tammy for sharing this information with our listeners. Don’t forget to check out the photo gallery below to see a sneak peek of this great attraction!

Other show conversation and fun centered around Gary starting the new year off by being a tourist himself and spending several days of the first week of  2011 in the Bahamas. If you listened in, you know his island destination and what Discovery he came across.

The weekly Bahamas Update, Treasure Coast Things-to-Do, Places-to-Go and People-to-See, and more is ready for you when you download last Friday’s show. Here's the file!

See you on Friday from the Stuart Boat Show!

Treasure Coast Traditions--Holiday and More!

All that was missing at the Elliott Museum studio Friday morning was the rum-laced eggnog. Poinsettias, Christmas ornaments, Christmas carols and a 12-foot Christmas tree reminded us (especially those of us who still haven't started our shopping) that Christmas is only 15-days away!

After a one-month hiatus, History Lady and Radio Man had lots of catching up to do. The show kicked-off with Historical Society of Martin County communications director Amy Christensen launching into the details of the Society’s classic car show, which is held in the spring and now moving to the airport because it has grown so large! If you have a classic automobile that you would like to show off, there is still time to register. Last week's show's audio (download here) will give you all the details you need.

Here on the Treasure Coast, boats and everything related to boating, is a BIG deal. That said, Rick Allen, president of AllSports Productions and producer of the 37th annual Stuart Boat Show, gave listeners the rundown on this annual Stuart tradition. Some of the topics covered included whether a boat show a good place to purchase a boat and how to figure out what type of boating lifestyle appeals to you and your family? Rick had the answers and this year’s show will have something for everyone, including the kids. Have you ever thought about joining the cruiser boating lifestyle? If so, you'll want to check out what Rick had to say about Cruiser Expo, which is part of the Stuart Boat Show. This annual event will draw vendors and attendee’s from near and far. For the latest announcements on the show, become a friend of the Stuart Boat Show's Facebook page. And, while you're at it, if you aren't already one of our Facebook fans, don't forget to become a fan of the Talkin' Tourism Facebook page!

Rounding out the show, we took a look at some of the programs and activities available at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center on Hutchinson Island and we covered what's happening in the Islands of the Bahamas. What are you doing for New Year’s Eve? Want to party at the End of the World? Talkin’ Tourism has the scoop on a great Bimini Big Game Club event that you don't want to miss! Learn more when you listen to the show, or if you can't wait, follow this link.

Always fun and always entertaining, Talkin’ Tourism on Florida’s Treasure Coast (and Beyond!) is the show to listen in on to keep you up to date on things to do, places to go and people to meet!

See you on Friday! Stay warm. If you need help, try the eggnog recipe posted above!

And here's a gift for all you procrastinators. How many shopping days do you have left? The snowman knows! Good luck!

A Treasure Coast Tradition---The Stuart Boat Show (and Cruiser Expo)

The Stuart Boat Show and Cruiser Expo cruise into
Stuart January 14-16, 2011.
With unsurpassed waterways, 22 miles of coastline, an inlet leading to the Gulf Stream and a position at the east end of the Cross Florida Canal/Okeechobee Waterway, Martin County is the definitely a boating, fishing and outdoorsman’s paradise.

With the Treasure Coast sailfish tournament season now in full swing, it is only a matter of weeks until the largest boat show south of Annapolis, Maryland sails in to Stuart, Florida. Rick Allen, president of AllSports Productions, the producer of the Marine Industries of the Treasure Coast owned show, is this week’s featured guest. Rick will share with Radio Man and History Lady what makes this 37th year of the Stuart Boat Show so special. With over $100 million in products on display and over 500 boats of every shape and size, this show is one not to miss.

A relatively new feature of the Stuart Boat Show is Cruiser Expo. Based upon the popularity of the cruising lifestyle, Cruiser Expo is the place to be to learn, mix and mingle with others who enjoy the art of cruising. During the course of the three-day weekend, informative seminars and information sharing will cover subjects for both the novice and seasoned skipper. We'll cover all the topics and details on the show. And, if you want more updates on the show, become a fan of the Stuart Boat Show's Facebook page.

It has been one month since History Lady and Radio Man have shared the studio microphones, which means a whole lot of catching up is guaranteed. Robin has big news on the Elliott Museum's Annual Classic Car Show and other great museum exhibits, which you won't want to miss.

As always, there will be Bahamas updates, Treasure Coast happening’s and lots of infotainment.

Scenic Highways, World-Class Festivals & Florida's 'Out-Islands'

The Martin Grade by Thomas Winter
The days of when there was nothing to do during the summer on the Treasure Coast are long gone. New events and activities along with old standards, such as Stuart’s Dancing in the Streets, keep residents and visitors alike busy. So what’s new? How about a world-class barbeque festival? Yum! The Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce is doing just that on July 10, 2010 when it presents the Hobe Sound BBQ Festival 2010. This isn't just a plain, ordinary festival, it's a Florida Bar-B-Que Association sanctioned event, meaning the best of the best will be competing for $10,000 in prizes. What does that mean to you? It means that you get a chance to taste some of the best barbeque this side of the Tex-Mex border!

The Hobe Sound Chamber's executive director, Jennifer Ferrari ,will be in the house on Friday to give you all the details.

Most anyone who has traveled across the United States or abroad is familiar with special spots along the way offering scenic overlooks (such as in the mountains), scenic trails (for hikers),  or scenic highways. Martin County, Florida is in the process of applying for a scenic highway designation for a portion of highway located in western Martin County, which is known to locals as the Martin Grade. Mary Dawson,  chairman of the Sustaining Community Lands group, will be in the Elliott Museum-Talkin' Tourism studio this week providing listeners with an update on the group's efforts to bring scenic highway designation to this beautiful stretch of highway. Radio Man has been keeping up with the process and is amazed as to how complicated it is to get something seemingly a no-brainer accomplished.

Martin Grade is a 12 mile long stretch of tree-lined road featuring sable palms, pines and oaks that are over 100 years old. Just how many official Scenic Highways are there in Florida? Are there any others in South Florida? These questions and more will be answered on Friday's (July 2) show.

Rumor has it that Radio Man was sited on Grand Bahama Island this week. Included in the locations he was seen were Blue Marlin Cove, Old Bahama Bay, the West End Police Station (huh?) and Port Lucaya. What is Radio Man up to now? Scouting for another radio show location? Searching for the best Bahama Mama recipe?

Tune in again this Friday, July 2, at 10 a.m. for more fun and infotainment LIVE on WPSL 1590 AM, the Talk of the Treasure Coast, or on your computer at http://www.wpsl.com/.

On a Twin Vee mission to Abaco

Talkin Tourism on Florida’s Treasure Coast, the Official Flahama radio station, is now one step closer to becoming “pirate radio.”

Talkin' Tourism co-hosts Gary Guertin and Robin Hicks-Connors will certainly be on the move in the coming weeks. We decided to scrap the original concept for this week’s show (broadcasting from the House of Refuge on Hutchinson Island, Stuart, Florida) because Radio Man was offered an intriguing assignment - to help deliver a 26-foot Twin Vee Catamaran to a secret destination in Abaco, Bahamas.

You may ask, "What does this have to do with Treasure Coast tourism…and wasn’t Radio Man in Abaco just two weeks ago?"  Well, ladies and gentleman, the ever-popular Twin Vee Catamaran is made right here on our very own Treasure Coast.  Yes indeed, their plant is located in Fort Pierce.  And this well-crafted boat is extremely popular in the islands.  The more Twin Vees are ordered, the more Treasure Coast marine trades craftsman will be working - see, marine tourism does work to make a difference!

Accompanying Radio Man on this adventure will be Ben Martin, editor of the Florida’s most widely read fishing and boating publications, Coastal Angler Magazine.

Other guests that may appear on the show are still a mystery at this time.  It's rumored, however, that world-renowned fishing guide Thatch McGuire may be in the house.  Knowing Gary and the cast of characters living and playing in Marsh Harbour, he will not be at a loss for a couple more guests.  Who knows, Radio Man may just run into some Treasure Coasters along the way.

Hopefully, History Lady will be able to make the phone connection to the radio station and have a part in the show. She's helping make some great things happen at the Elliott Museum.

So loyal listeners, you know the drill - Friday at 10 a.m. on WPSL 1590 AM, or www.wpsl.com! And don't forget to "Like" us on Facebook!

A Commissioner's Perspective and Surfin' Florida USA

After last week's live remote from Costa d'Este, which Gary had fun hyping to Robin since she missed out on the experience, both were ensconced back at Harborage Yacht Club & Marina and were back on track.  Before tourism talk could resume, both shared highpoints from the past two weeks. First, Robin shared that the Historical Society received an Addy from the Treasure Coast Ad Federation and Gary shared he'd been appointed to a national marina legislation committee and served on a LEADERSHIP Martin County economic panel, representing the marine and tourism industries. Congratulations to both!

Martin County Commission Board Chairman Doug Smith was first up this week and shared with listeners his thoughts on a variety of local, regional and state industry issues. Commissioner Smith also shared his opinon on offshore oil drilling in Florida. Other topics discussed included collaboration among tourism stakeholders and whether a convention center was in the future.

Next up were Justin Beard, the director of communications for the United Way of Martin County and Jordan Schwartz, owner of Ohana Surf Shop on Hutchinson Island. Both got the Talkin' Tourism hosts in the groove for the upcoming Stuart Single Fin Showdown surf contest, an event purposely designed to be a great seaside family event. And, whether you are a surf dude or dudette, or even a spectator, a fun day should be enjoyed by all. Jordan promises the surf gods are predicting a good swell for the event. History Lady had a hand in this year’s event and is hosting the Palm Beach County Surfing History Project at the Elliott Museum. Cowabunga! Robin!!

Next, the show took a side trip to old Cape Cod. "Moonlight and sand dunes and salty air, quaint little villages here and there," thanks for the memories Patti Page.

Last, lyrical tourism? Will someone eventually write and record the Treasure Coast anthem? Where are you Mr. Buffett?

If you missed the show, this week's audio can be downloaded HERE. Enjoy your weekend! See you next Friday.

Explore a 'new' island--the past, present and future--and, why is our 'poster child' being trashed?

Back from Green Turtle Cay, but next show host Gary Guertin and co-host Robin Hicks-Connors are back on an island. What island? Our very own Hutchinson Island of course!

Another remote broadcast this week, this time LIVE from the Elliott Museum on beautiful Hutchinson Island in Stuart, Florida. Talkin' Tourism on Florida’s Treasure Coast will explore the past, present and future of what visitors have found to be classic tourist attraction in beautiful Martin County.

Robin, who is CEO of the Historical Society of Martin County, will talk about the past, present and exciting future plans for the Elliott Museum, how many visitors do they attract each year, and about the unique collections and displays visitors and locals will find in the museum.

Florida Oceanographic Society’s executive director, Mark Perry, will also join the crew and share his vision of the continued development of the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center and why this attraction is vital to the continued education of locals and visitors alike, as well about the importance of our ocean and coastal resources.

Also, why is Bathtub Reef Beach, one of Martin County’s most valuable resources, being 'trashed?' Eve Samples recent Stuart News article seems to have stirred up a hornets nest of opinion. Talkin' Tourism will talk about this concern and what can be done. Have an opinion? E-mail Talkin' Tourism: talkintourism@gmail.com. We’d love to hear from you.
